Ruby first entered the world of the Winchester brothers after they released her from Hell. Though she stayed away for several weeks, Ruby began entering the picture after the boys and Bobby Singer found themselves facing off against the Seven Deadly Sins. Ruby kept a firm eye on the brothers, especially Sam, following him for days before they were finally attacked by the Sins. While alone and facing Pride, Greed and Gluttony—Ruby entered the safe hold and with her knife, she killed the three demons and saved Sam’s life before disappearing again. No explanation was given to him before she vanished back into the night she’d first appeared from.

Her next encounter with Sam came shortly thereafter. While overall rather glib in her attitude, Ruby explained that Sam should look into his mother’s friends and then give her a call. After doing so, Sam finally demanded out-right to have Ruby explain who she was—and how she knew so much about him and his family. Ruby admitted to being a demon. Though panicked at first, Ruby calmed Sam down as best she could, explaining that all she wanted was to assist him in the future, and keep him safe, though she wouldn’t explain why, keeping her motives to herself. The only thing she flat-out explained was that she wanted to know exactly why The Yellow Eyed Demon had gone through so much trouble to keep what he’d done to Sam a secret by killing everyone Mary Winchester had ever known. Ruby also confessed that, if Sam let her help him, she’d help him save Dean from his deal.

The next person Ruby goes to is not, in fact Sam, but instead Bobby Singer. While trying to reconstruct the Colt, Ruby shows up on his property, basically being a nuisance. After showing him that she’s a Demon, she taunts him into shooting her with the Colt, which is ineffective. She then tells him that she’ll help rebuild the Colt, which she essentially does, making it once again an effective tool in killing demons. Ruby and Bobby both head to find Sam and Dean to give them the Colt, which enables Sam to kill two demons. She later finds Sam in his motel room, sending the two of them into an argument as she refuses to give him any insight into her plans or motives. She threatens to take the Colt form him and give it to someone else who will help her, and Sam threatens to kill her. Ruby tells him to go for it—but in the end, Sam relents, and the two come to a truce.

After all, if Sam kills her, she can’t help save Dean from his deal.

The next time Ruby has a run in with the Winchester’s, it’s to try and protect them from another demon in the midst of a hunt they’re on. The demon just so happens to be the one that Ruby sold her soul to as a witch when she was still alive, a few years before she died in the Plague. Dean saved Ruby from being exorcized by killing the other demon with her dagger, and later claimed that she is one of the only demons she knows of that still remembers what it’s like to be human. It’s because of this that she’s trying to help Sam and Dean win their war, and why she wants Lilith dead. She also told him that she wished she was like other demons; it’d make her existence much easier.

Ruby came to their aid once again when the brothers were trapped in a prison with a number of civilians, battling an onslaught of demons. To try and save them since they lost the colt (which she helped rebuild, something that really pissed her off), she offered to do a spell that would kill every demon in the area, she included. The spell needed the heart of a virgin in order to work, and Dean refused to allow her to do it. Angry, Ruby left the brothers and the civilians to try and battle their own way out of the prison. Ruby came back to them while they were in their hotel after escaping, showing them a news reel on television that showed that, after they left, the other people that had survived had been killed by Lilith, the demon that is out for Sam.

The last time Ruby actually saw the Winchester’s was when Sam summoned her in South Dakota. She claimed that he had a ‘time bomb’ inside of him, and together, they could go after Lilith, kill her, and save Dean. Dean refused to let her get into Sam’s head, and ended up having a very aggressive fight with her, in which he stole her dagger and left her vulnerable in a Devil’s Trap. It was during this time that Ruby was hijacked from the host body she’d been using by Lilith, who then took the body to track the boys down and fool them before allowing her Hell Hounds to kill Dean and attempt to kill Sam. Ruby has since been looking for a host body after getting out of the trap that Lilith had been keeping her inside ever since ejecting her from her last body.

In the past six months, Ruby has inhabited two different bodies. First, she inhabited the body of Meredith Grey, a secretery. After expelling herself from this body upon Sam's request, Ruby entered the vacant, comatose body of Kristy Morales.
