THIERRY BERGMANN
i was alone, falling free
trying my best not to forget
what happened to us, what happened to me
what happened as i let it slip
i was confused by the powers that be
forgetting names and faces
passers by, were looking at me
as if they could erase it

personality
Over the course of the many years Thierry has been alive, it suffices to say that his personality has molded and remolded itself a number of times. Going from a carefree little boy to a ruthless killer who's heart had been hardened by the tragedies it had sustained, Thierry has been nothing short of mad since the day his parents were murdered. Although he was taken in by a relatively good witch who taught him the error of his ways (as well as ensured he would no longer kill an innocent so long as she was around), it comes as little surprise to any that meet him that his mind has been irreparably damaged, and the longer he remains alive, the more his psyche suffers.
As part of a defence mechanism to shield his fragile sanity, Thierry often times presents himself as a man suffering from a very advanced Peter Pan complex. Seeing as he prefers to present himself as nothing more than a childish young adult, Thierry seems to enjoy the reactions he gets out of people. Whether they believe him to be mentally challenged or a basketcase, it's safe to say that he takes a great amount of pleasure out of irritating everyone he comes across. That isn't to say that he's immune to the judgment they'll present to him, however, and there are times where his guard isn't entirely up. In such a rare occurrence of vulnerability, Thierry will often times find himself unprepared for harsh criticism or even light-hearted mocking. These sorts of moments usually end with Thierry's feelings being hurt, and he will undoubtedly sulk for however long it takes to receive an apology or forget about it himself.
Surprising as it may be to some, as immature as he prefers to act, Thierry is actually quite mature and capable of being well-behaved – he simply doesn't like to be. In his mind, why would he want to act like every other normal, sane Joe when he could be something much more memorable? Either he leaves a positive imprint on someone or he doesn't, he clearly likes the idea of making sure he's remembered for years to come. It is likely thought by some that his madness is fueled by his need for attention, and they would not be wrong in this assumption; Thierry does indeed thrive off of attention, mostly of the positive, loving sort, and will do whatever it takes to get it. From dressing eccentrically and wearing make-up, to invading others' personal space and demanding straight up that they pay him the time of day, Thierry is shameless in his means of garnering as much attention as possible.
But there is another, entirely different side to him yet that makes his aforementioned attention-seeking attitude seem like a godsend. Being a half-demon who is not particularly fond of humans, it's needless to say that Thierry is sadistic and reckless, often giving into his more demonic desires. He enjoys the smell of carnage and greatly enjoys the feeling of fresh blood running over his skin; his taste and thirst for death only magnifies as the years roll on, and it takes near-monthly "treats" in the form of convicted killers or rapists from Charre to keep this side of his under control. Were it not for the witch, it can be assumed that Thierry would still be as feral and uncontrollable as he once was, and he can sometimes hint to this part of his being if only to receive a reaction.
Accompanied with his madness and immaturity is his inability to trust many people. He is very much the type of man who will only keep a person around for as long as he sees fit, at least until they have worn out their usefulness. To earn one's way into his circle of trust isn't necessarily difficult so much as getting out is; once he's become attached, there is very little that could persuade him to release someone, regardless of their own personal requests. Seeing as the only person he actually, genuinely listens to without any qualms is Charre, it's safe to say that there is rarely a moment in time where anyone can boast that they have convinced Thierry to do something he otherwise wouldn't dream of doing.
All in all, Thierry is more complicated than he first appears. On one end of the spectrum is the boy who never grew up, while on the other is a ruthless beast constantly wanting to cleave through bone and tear through flesh. While the latter is mostly hidden deep beneath the various layers of damaged psychosis, it's never wise to test his patience or see how long he can last beneath pressure or insult. If he feels cornered, he will do whatever he can to get away, even if it means subjecting himself to another fifty years worth of imprisonment for his actions. Where it appears as though he very rarely thinks about the consequences of his actions, Charre's cruelty when scorned is one ever present in his mind as she is the only creature on this earth he fears as much as he loves.
abilities
- TORTURE BY CHAGRIN — Thierry can take anything from horrible, traumatising memories of watching a loved one get ripped apart by a demon, to tripping on their shoelaces in front of their crush and use it against them. If given the right incentive, he can use this enough to cause physical pain.
- MORICHRO — The ability to slow and suspend biological functions, such as breathing, heart rate and brain activity. Thierry is able to use this not only on himself (and as a result be able to withstand going days without food, water, or even air for some periods of time), but also on those around him. Given that he has very limited control over this power, there's only so much he can do without killing his subject or himself.
- – It can be assumed that Thierry has more abilities, but hasn't woken them just yet. Lord knows what lies beneath the various levels of psychosis.
background
THIS IS GRADUALLY BEING RE-WRITTEN BECAUSE LEON IS FUCKING INSANE AND HATES THE CURRENT VERSION.
1888 was a year of murder in London, where Thierry Bergmann was born to a German mother and demonic father who had dennounced his evil ways. Jack the Ripper had begun his legendary killings of London prostitutes approximately three days after the screaming, writhing infant was brought into the world. Born nearly an hour after his twin brother, Thierry seemed to be destined for stubbornness, and his own father found himself questioning just how two very patient people had brought such a creature to being. Nether the less, the Bergmanns took their sons home to raise them like any other proper family ought to.
Living the life of social elites had its perks, however dull Thierry found them as he grew up. He was interested in neither etiquette nor “proper schooling,” and seemed to be dead-set on disobeying any rule that was laid out to him. But no matter how grim that may have seemed for Emma and Sixon, the Bergmanns were actually quite the happy family. They spent nearly everyday together, going to parks or enjoying their cabin in the woods during summer, flying kites in the spring, and building snowmen every winter. There was no other family in all of London that shared the same closeness as the Bergmanns. Of course, they were no typical family. With a human mother and demonic father, there were sometimes when the twins' own demonic halfs attempted to overpower them.
One summer while the twins were preoccupied with playing hide-and-seek with one another, a knock came on the Bergmann’s front door. While visitors and a simple knock may not have been of any importance to two eight-year-old boys, this particular day had proven to be the most significant turning point in their lives. Emma was the one to answer the door, and allow the five men that wielded weapons inside the house. She thought, perhaps, that if she were to cooperate that they would leave her family alone. Still, she took no chances, and had made it clear to her sons with a simple hand gesture that they remain hidden.
Discussion had taken place, but Thierry can hardly remember what it was about. There were some things about demons, a word that he was very familiar with (for he was part-demon himself), and some things about sympathisers synonymous with the word “disgust.” Thierry sat patiently in the closet and watched the ordeal through the thin crack, now and again feeling the urge to run out there and protect his mother. Why on earth were those men there, anyway? His question wasn’t answered and without a single warning, one man suddenly lunged forward and grabbed Emma by her wrists to hold them behind her back tightly. The others began closing in and Thierry quite nearly threw himself out of the closet to help her, but she spotted him and, while the men didn’t seem to pay attention to her, shook her head stiffly.
So there he sat while his mother was interrogated by these strange men. They asked her question after question, demanding that she give up the whereabouts of her lover to them, but she wouldn’t budge. When they seemed to realise that there was a child -- or children -- within the household (for they had seen a pair of Thierry’s shoes lying on the floor), they made a move to begin searching but Emma twisted free and threw herself toward them and began to scream and attack them as best she could. To protect her children was what she lived, and died for. Two of the men had drawn their daggers and took to stabbing her, but she continued to fight until her body could no longer do anything more, and she fell to the ground unceremoniously in a puddle of her own blood, which was inching its way to her son’s hiding spot. Her eyes remained open, staring at him with tears threatening to fall even as she took her last breath.
There was more horror to be had for Thierry. His father, outraged by the sudden attack, attempted to avenge his wife’s death by assaulting the men himself. Three of them were died within a matter of seconds, their blood falling to the ground and mixing with Emma’s, but it seemed as if the leader of the group had been too much for Sixon. A large slice off of each leg had ensured that he not be able to pick himself up from the ground, and he wasn’t given time to recover from the rather devastating blow. The remaining two finished off Thierry’s father by way of decapitation, and took a moment to discuss what they would do next.
Apparently not interested in attempting to find whatever child might be hiding, the two men simply left the Bergmann household, presumably to regain their bearings. Thierry was never sure of how long he had remained in that closet, staring at the bodies of his parents in horror. He simply couldn’t seem to fathom what had happened, and it took a rough shake from his twin to make him rip his eyes away from the scene and spin directly into a state of madness. He wouldn’t move from his spot, he absolutely refused to and no matter how much of his parents’ blood he was surrounded by, his twin could do nothing to convince Thierry to leave his spot. Finally, his brother knew that there wasn’t much he could do anymore, and he left the home promising Thierry he’d bring back help. So Thierry waited.
And waited, and waited. Days would go by and he wouldn’t move from the spot, allowing himself to sit in the blood that was slowly beginning to dry. His lower body, hands and even parts of his hair were caked in the crimson fluid, but he couldn’t find it within himself to get away from it. Now and again he would open his mouth, if only to try and persuade his mother and father to wake up, but it did little to help him.
It’s unclear as to when Thierry had finally decided to move from his spot and wander away from his home. Perhaps when it became clear to him that his twin wasn’t going to come back anytime soon he may have felt the need to go in search of his brother himself. No matter what his reasoning was, there was no mistake that there was no way for anyone to find him after they discovered the death of his parents.
Years passed by and Thierry had not been heard from, as he had secluded himself from nearly every living soul. The torment his mind suffered seeing his mother and father’s dead bodies had a devastating effect on his psyche, and with the disappearance of his twin, his sanity had decided to jump ship. It would be almost ten years before Thierry would resurface, but not in the best of moods. Having developed a deep dislike for humans, mostly those of the male species, he had gone into a bit of a murderous rampage.
He would later reveal that he had spent two of those ten years of silence trying to find the men who had ruined his family. Within that time, he had discovered a means of tapping into a certain demonic ability he seemed to have developed, and he was more than willing to test drive its limits on more than just the kindly flower shop owner now. So when he finally managed to track down one of the two men, Thierry had not only used his very special power on them until they were writhing on the floor, but he opted to cut him up into little pieces before the job was done. He didn’t bother disposing the body (or what was left of it), however, and decided to instead put his efforts toward finding the leader of the little group.
As much anticipation as he had been feeling, he felt an equal amount of disappointment. Someone, it seemed, had gotten a hold of the hunter who had destroyed his family and his psyche and taken care of him themselves. Upset that he missed his chance to get revenge, Thierry turned his focus toward whoever it was that killed the hunter and it wasn’t long before he managed to track them down – her, actually.
A woman who was more beautiful than most Thierry had seen (and that was saying something) had done what he had wanted to do for so long, and he couldn‘t have been more furious. It was at the site of one hunter‘s murder that he flew into a rage and attempted to kill her, but she very easily managed to bind him to a wall. All he could do was writhe and scream until his throat was sore and voice was hoarse. He had spent so long trying to find the men who had killed his parents and broke him, only to have some woman mess it all up for him. No, he was not happy, and he very nearly broke down a second time before she suddenly asked him why he wanted these men so badly.
For the first time in his life, Thierry willingly told another living soul who was not tied down or otherwise rendered immobile about his parents. His anger had all but subsided when she took pity on him and allowed him to finish what he‘d wanted to do for so long. The satisfaction of killing the man who killed him and his family was more than he had ever thought it would be. Covered in the blood of the hunter, it was then that the woman had made a rather interesting offer: to have tea with her and discuss some things. Delighted and much less of the furious variety, Thierry gladly accepted and was soon after welcomed into her home as a permanent guest.
Sometime within their first month of knowing one another, she seemed to have discovered who he really was. The Demon Klaus was notorious for how brutal his murders were on the innocent, and that made him the embodiment of what she swore to kill. He knew she was inclined to kill him the night she had approached him suddenly and in the most serious of manner. Had he been prepared for death? Of course not. He was just as ready as anyone to attempt a run if she made a move to harm him, but it didn‘t appear as if she was actually going to kill him. Instead, she opted to teach him the difference between right and wrong, a concept he either had no idea of or regard for.
Still, he managed to follow her instructions correctly as much as he was willing to. He had a few missteps here and there, but nothing too incredibly serious that earned him more than a Charre-style slap on the wrist. It wasn‘t until he had an epic mess up in the early fifties that Charre showed him just how cruel she could be when he pushed his luck too far. Upon the murder of a young teenage boy and the planned murder of said boy‘s mother, Charre discovered his intentions and punished him for both.
This time it was much more harsh than he had ever been subjected to before, and where he had before been blissfully free of remorse or guilt, he was suddenly wracked with a maddening amount of both for the next few years. Locked away in a room in those long years, Thierry was tormented with the wrongs he had committed in the name of his own lust for blood. During this time Charre had taken special care to drill her lessons into his brain and even while subjecting him to such torment had made sure he was properly taken care of. This manner of teaching him seemed to be incredibly effective, and Charre managed to make Klaus quite docile, if one could call that anything. For the fifty years he remained in confinement, it wasn‘t until recently that Charre deemed it acceptable to allow him back into „society.“
Now, in spite of being „free“, Thierry stays at Charre’s side and acts as a sort of „pet“ for her, although he deeply resents being referred to as such by anyone who isn’t her. He has his homicidal tendencies, though he focuses them more on those who would harm other people than he does just any other person. Going against common sense, Thierry sees no trouble in introducing himself as what he is – a half-blood who’s very inclined to either stab you in the eye or give you a warm hug. At least meeting him would be unforgettable, right?
Social
→ relationships
family
- Samson Bergmann / Sixon — Father, deceased. A demon who sympathised with humans, he remained underground for a long time until he met Emma, a young human female. He was incredibly devoted to his wife until the day he died.
- Emma Bergmann — Mother, deceased. Beautiful young woman that Thierry adored more than he'd ever admit. Her death affected him beyond comprehension, and made him into what he is today.
- ????? — Twin brother, presumed deceased. Thierry's twin was the only person he ever connected with. His disappearance left Thierry insecure and full of questions, but after years of searching he gave up and opted to forget all about him. It makes life without his twin easier.
- ????? — Son, presumed deceased. Thierry cut him out of a one-time lover's womb after discovering she was eight months pregnant. He hasn't seen him since, and has since come to the conclusion that he died or never even existed in the first place.
friends
- Charre Tangvald — "Owner." Thierry met her whilst hunting for the Hunters what killed his parents all those years ago. She had already done away with one of them, but after a near-violent confrontation with her about it (as well as her being the first and only person he'd ever spoken to about his parents), he was given free reign to off the remaining Hunter. Since then, they've been fantastically close in that "friends with benefits" sort of way, and there's no one he trusts more. They've had their many ups and few downs that usually end with him being punished, but she's kept him alive and out of harm's way (i.e., other demon hunters, slayers, et cetera.) Since her arrival in his life, all texts about "The Demon Klaus" have ceased since 1905.
- Jamie Bellafonte — Thierry greatly enjoys this man's company. They met when Thierry was out for a stroll and the man was being followed by a rude blonde girl. Because he had been injured at the time, the half-demon took it upon himself to escort (read: follow) him back to his place and has been making a habit of stalking him ever since. There's a lot about Jamie that Thierry doesn't know too much about, and he's made it his personal mission to discover as much as humanly possible before Jamie gets sick of him.
- Leia McKean — Another woman in his life that's very much a mother by nature! Thierry adores Leia quite a lot and would do almost anything for her if he was offered ice cream in return. Not only is she most wonderfully astute people he's ever met (seeing as she wanted to draw him specifically upon their first real life meeting), but she also happens to have the most adorable nose in existence. Since their meeting, Thierry has dubbed her his would-be "aunt" in his mind, and won't hesitate to go to her when Charre is busy and he's not up for dealing with Jamie.
- Alexander Harris — The man without an eye. Thierry adores this guy to no end, though one might think that to be a terrible thing for Xander. Due to his inability to recognise irritation from certain people until there's physical violence, Thierry likes to think Xander is a mutual friend and someone that he can torment without repercussion. He might be wrong, he might be right; either way, he really wants to play with his eyehole.
- Oliver Gonmole — He likes her. Quite a lot, actually. In spite of being postively sure she was going to abandon their conversation at some point, she has since redeemed herself in his eyes and made him see her as a very cute, very likable little girl. He may or may not feel the urge to kidnap her and play doctor, however.
Miscellaneous
→ random facts
- Thierry has an extreme fondness for blood, and has to force himself not to give into his urges.
- He loves rabbits, and he's been known to carve an image of a rabbit into his victims.
- McDonald's is his absolute favourite "restaurant." He doesn't like vegetables.
- When Thierry is very tired or half-awake, he has no comprehension of the English language.
- Until proven otherwise, he will never believe anyone will hurt him if they aren't a demon hunter/vampire/elite demon.
- His favourite hobbies include drawing, chasing pigeons and Charre's robotic vacuum cleaner, and stalking people he likes.
- His tongue and eyebrow are both pierced, and he has an assortment of tattoos all over his body.
- Thierry is deathly afraid of heights, locked doors, and the feeling of weightlessness. This means he tends to avoid airplanes and being on the top floor of buildings, throws himself into a panic when locked in a room, and absolutely cannot ride a roller coaster.
